In today’s fast-paced logistics landscape, having the right mix of shipping solutions is vital to moving dry food and cold chain freight quickly and efficiently. Intermodal shipping is becoming increasingly popular in the food and beverage industry as a method to improve efficiency, reduce costs and support larger sustainability goals.

Intermodal shipping is the integration of multiple transportation methods, such as truck and rail. According to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), total intermodal shipping volume rose 9.8% year-over-year in Q3 of 2024 – the fourth consecutive quarter of YoY growth. Additionally, the Association of American Railroads estimates that railroads transport 1.7 million carloads of food products per year.

Compared to traditional truck-only shipping methods, intermodal solutions offer several unique benefits, making now the perfect time for food and beverage companies to add intermodal to their freight strategies ahead of 2025.
