Introducing Werner EDGE: Our Company’s Commitment to Technology and Innovation

In 1956, CL Werner founded Werner Enterprises with nothing more than a dream and a Ford gasoline-powered truck. Today, CL’s entrepreneurial spirit remains steadfast and has been a driving force behind our company’s growth to a fleet of more than 8,000 trucks, over 24,000 trailers, 26,000 alliance carriers and numerous offices throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and China.

Since the beginning, Werner has valued safety, service, teamwork and innovation. In 1998, Werner was the first carrier to implement electronic logging devices (ELDs). Throughout the years, Werner has continued to be a leader in freight transportation innovation as one of the largest transportation and logistics companies in the nation. Most recently, Werner has taken its focus in technology to the next level by announcing its innovation initiative, Werner EDGE.

As the innovation arm of the business, Werner EDGE delivers the latest technology solutions to advance the experience of drivers, shippers and carriers. This initiative is designed to serve Werner’s 5T framework (trucks, trailers, terminals, talent and technology) and brings together Werner’s rich history of operational leadership with forward-thinking innovation. It is expected to reshape the transportation and logistics industry for years to come.

One of the first solutions to launch within the Werner EDGE initiative is a tablet-based telematics solution. This solution creates a smart workflow for professional drivers while supporting a safer driver experience. Drivers will see many benefits, including freedom of mobility, ease of use, time savings, a focus on safety and more.

“The new, untethered telematics tablet is effective, fast, and the workflow feature condenses my daily requirements, which makes my day much easier,” said Werner Road Team captain and three million miles accident-free driver Matt Hardin

This cutting-edge telematics device is designed for professional drivers to support a safer and more efficient driver experience. This is achieved through added mobility as the tablet is untethered, the interface and workflow are intuitive, and fields are auto-populated when the information is known elsewhere. The transition will be taking place over the next several months and initial feedback from professional drivers is promising.

“This new telematics device has had a positive impact on individuals who are just starting their career as a professional driver,” said Fleet Manager Chase S. “The features are seamless, connected, and provide structure to a driver’s day and this leads to more time to focus on other value-adding tasks.”

In addition to telematics advancements, Werner EDGE has launched other initiatives to improve the professional driver experience, which includes a critical event management solution and a cloud- breakdown management solution.

  • Powered by machine learning, Critical Event Management identifies and responds to safety events more effectively, providing drivers with coaching and accolades in real-time.
  • A cloud-based solution, Breakdown Management, that simplifies the repair order process during a road breakdown, getting drivers back on the road safely and without delay.

In 2020 and beyond, Werner EDGE plans to launch more driver, shipper and carrier innovations.

This is only the beginning.

What Is Final Mile and Why Does My Organization Need It?

In the world of free shipping and same-day delivery, final mile, also known as last-mile delivery, has become an integral part of the supply chain and a defining element of the customer experience. Final mile delivery refers to the last leg of a product’s transportation journey before it reaches its final destination. It’s the final step toward getting your products from a distribution or fulfillment center and into the hands of the customer.
