Protecting Our Drivers with New Forward-Facing Cameras

As a leading transportation company, the safety of our professional drivers and the motoring public is at the forefront of all we do.  To that end, Werner is committed to exploring every possible option to increase safety by providing ongoing driver training and investing in top-of-the-line collision mitigation technology.

Recently, Werner collaborated with the transportation technology company Samsara to start outfitting our fleet with their forward-facing dashcams. When a critical event is detected, the dashcams record automatically, capturing footage leading up to, during and after the event. The video will then be immediately uploaded to a secure cloud where it can only be reviewed by authorized associates.

With the footage from Samsara’s devices, Werner will be able to analyze driver behavior and determine appropriate courses of action.  Footage can also be used for training and review purposes, allowing our team to better understand how accidents can happen and how to prevent them in the future.

We understand forward facing cameras may be viewed as an invasion of privacy, so, we are approaching this implementation with full transparency. The Samsara CM31 cameras are forward-facing only, and they do not record any in-cab activity or audio. They only monitor and record the road ahead.   Footage will only be uploaded to the cloud for critical events, like collisions. In addition, only authorized users within the company will have access to the video footage.

Samsara forward facing cameras are also equipped with an in-cab safety alert feature. These alerts warn drivers of high-risk behaviors and provide an audio warning when detected. Audio alerts include following distance, speeding, rolling stops, and hard braking.

Werner will continue to explore new technologies and features that can keep our professional drivers and the motoring public safe.
