Professional Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program
Werner developed and introduced the industry’s first Truck Driver Apprenticeship Program, registered by the Department of Labor and approved by the VA in April 2006.
This program allows you to earn credit for the training and proficiency you will gain with Werner. Some of these skills include pre-, post- and Department of Transportation inspections, decision making and driving skills during inclement weather, customer relations, as well as computer-based and classroom instruction.
This program is open to professional truck drivers with up to 12-months experience to enroll for a period not to exceed 24 months of experience. Once completed, apprentices earn a certificate from the Department of Labor, which can be transferred to college credits at participating schools. Those who are eligible to receive VA educational benefits can earn up to $25,881.60 in tax-free benefits, on top of Werner pay.
Introduced in August 2013, this program reimburses military members, veterans, military/veteran spouses, and military/veteran dependents who use VA educational benefits to pay for truck driving school as first time student truck drivers.
Military Skills Test Waiver
The Military Skills Test Waiver allows service members who are currently licensed and who are or were employed within the past year (12 months) in a military motor vehicle equivalent to a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) to apply for a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL-A), taking only the written exam as no skill testing is required.
Please ensure you check with your State DMV for current Military Skills Test Waiver Form.
Elite Veteran Driver Program
The most visible initiative within the Operation Freedom program is the Operation Freedom Fleet.
This fleet, driven by veteran employees, is comprised of military-themed trucks used to honor, recruit, and retain military community members. These military community members attend military and corporate recruiting events while hauling freight safely and on time.
The Freedom Fleet has received multiple awards and accolades from truck shows and military organizations. However, the pride that each driver feels being a part of this elite fleet and paying honor and respect to the military community is their biggest reward.
The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) of 1994 prohibits employers from discriminating against any employee or prospective employee because of past, present, or future application for, or membership in, a uniformed service.
USERRA is intended to minimize the disadvantages to an individual that occur when the person needs to be absent from his or her civilian employment to serve in this country’s uniformed services and also to provide retention of reemployment rights.
